Privacy Policy
Last updated October 8, 2026.
The short version
- We collect very little: your email address if you join The Monthly Brief, whatever you choose to send us by email, and the basic technical logs every website keeps.
- We don’t use ad networks, advertising cookies or tracking cookies, and you don’t need an account to read anything here.
- We never sell, rent or trade your information, and our sponsor never sees it.
- You can unsubscribe, see what we hold about you, correct it or ask us to delete it, any time, by writing to desk@solebrief.com.
Who we are
Sole Brief (“we”, “us”) publishes solebrief.com and The Monthly Brief from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. We’re responsible for the personal information described here. Questions about privacy go to our privacy contact at desk@solebrief.com.
What we collect, and why
If you join The Monthly Brief
We store your email address, the date and time you signed up, the page you signed up from, the exact consent wording you agreed to, and your confirmation that you’re 18 or older. We use it to send you the newsletter and to be able to show that you asked for it. We rely on your consent, and you can withdraw it any time.
If you email us
We keep your message, your email address and anything you choose to include, so we can reply and follow up, for example on a correction you’ve sent.
When you visit the site
Like every website, our host records basic technical information when a page is requested: your IP address, your browser and device type, the page you asked for and the time. It’s used to keep the site running, secure and protected from abuse, and it isn’t used to build a profile of you.
When you click a sponsor link
Links to our sponsor pass through a short address on this site (solebrief.com/go/…) that adds one to a daily count before sending you on. We keep only the date, which link was clicked and where it sat on the page. We don’t store your IP address or set a cookie, and the count can’t be tied to you. The sponsor may count your visit on its own site under its own privacy policy.
What we don’t collect
There are no reader accounts, no comments, no payments and no ad networks on this site; the only paid placement is our clearly labeled sponsor. We don’t use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. WordPress sets cookies only for the few people who log in to manage the site. We don’t currently use any third-party analytics; if that changes, we’ll name the tool on this page before it starts.
Who we share it with
Only the service providers who help us run Sole Brief, and only what each needs to do its job:
- Our web host, which stores the website, its database (including newsletter signups) and its server logs.
- An email service provider, once we choose one, to deliver The Monthly Brief. We’ll name it here before the first issue is sent.
- Our email provider for messages you send to desk@solebrief.com.
We never sell, rent or trade your information. We never share it with our sponsor or with any platform we cover. We would disclose it only if the law required us to.
Where it’s stored
Some of our service providers store data outside Canada, including in the United States. Information stored in another country is subject to that country’s laws, which may allow authorities there to access it.
How long we keep it
- Newsletter signups: for as long as you’re subscribed. When you unsubscribe, we keep a record of your address and the date you left, so we never email you again by mistake. Ask us and we’ll delete that record too.
- Emails you send us: as long as we need them to deal with what you wrote, after which we delete old correspondence.
- Server logs: for a limited period set by our host, for security and troubleshooting.
Your choices and your rights
- Unsubscribe using the link in any issue of The Monthly Brief, or by writing to us. We act on it right away.
- See what we hold about you, correct it, or ask us to delete it, by writing to desk@solebrief.com. We’ll reply within 30 days.
- Withdraw your consent at any time. It won’t affect anything we did before you withdrew it.
- Complain. If you’re not happy with how we’ve handled your information, tell us first and we’ll try to put it right. You can also contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia (oipc.bc.ca (opens in a new tab)) or, if you live elsewhere, the privacy authority where you live.
If you’re in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you also have the right to object to or restrict how we use your information and to receive a copy in a portable format. If you’re in California: we don’t sell or share personal information, as those terms are used in California law.
Adults only
Sole Brief is for adults 18 and over. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have, we delete it.
How we protect it
The site is served over an encrypted connection, access to subscriber information is limited to the people who run Sole Brief, and our providers are chosen with security in mind. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable care, and we’ll tell you if a problem affects your information.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your information, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. If a change is significant, we’ll say so in The Monthly Brief before it takes effect.
